Tertiary

During the Tertiary period, the world became much cooler and dryer than in the Mesozoic, as Antarctica was glaciated. This cooling in the climate led to the demise of the humidity loving forests, and replacing them with grassland. Grass as we know it today first appeared about 40 mya, during the Eocene epoch. The evolution of grass resulted in the evolution of grazing animals, such as the horse. Also, it is likely that the savannahs directly influenced our own evolution, as apes came down from the trees and walked across these grasslands.
