Fossil wood slice

This Zimbabwean fossil slice of conifer wood is dated from between 208 and 146 million years old. Conifers were particularly common during the Jurassic, as deciduous trees and flowers had not evolved yet. Dinosaurs such as diplodocus would often knock over giant conifers even ones as big as the sequoia, to get at the smaller plants such as ferns that grew in-between them.
